If you haven’t been paying attention to Twitter, you might’ve missed out on the start of Cardi B’s fangirl era. But after seeing her getting hype over not one, but two actors, it’s safer to say that this is only the beginning.

The two lucky guys (and I say lucky because this is giving them LOTS of hype) happen to be Netflix’s You star, Penn Badgley, and most recently, Robert Pattinson.

Since my generation’s go-to is to roast/make fun of/ laugh at things (we cope with humour), it seems as if the general consensus is how hilariously random it is for Cardi B to fangirl over these two in particular. But now we know that Edward Cullen does it for Cardi.

I saw some tweets asking what kind of event would have Cardi B and Robert Pattinson there at the same time because that’s how unexpected this was for some people. Turns out it was a British Vogue event hosted in Beverly Hills. Also in attendance were stars like Cindy Crawford, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Jesse Williams. I’m sure she had conversations with those other stars, but specifically chose to post her interaction with Robert, and that means something. Cardi and Robert being in the same room isn’t as far off as it seems, but my generation cannot fathom seeing a world where rapping and vampires intersect. That’s why it’s so hilarious and the reason why this part that Cardi is playing is gold. The obvious relatability factor also plays a part here because Cardi is reacting in a way I’m sure we day-to-day people imagine reacting if we were able to meet Robert. It’s also an example of how powerful celebrities from long ago can still have an impact on all types of people (Lainey: LOL at baby Anastasia calling RP a “celebrity from long ago”). Cardi is showing us that despite the fact that she may actually be more famous (especially with my gen) or at least just as famous the people she fangirls, she’s as much of a pop culture consumer as she is actually part of pop culture herself. She made this clear with another fangirl moment with Penn Badgley. It all started when Cardi responded to this tweet a couple of weeks ago:

OOOOMMFFFGGGGGG HE KNOWS ME !!!😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱OMMMGGGG!!!!!!Yoooo like I’m famous famous https://t.co/Z7MFQc2t2i

After the first interaction, we were given a profile photo swap (that is still in effect!) and a Netflix reaction. Cardi B was also gifted a gift basket from Joe Goldberg himself.

My favourite part about this is how much Cardi has a handle on stan Twitter language. The obnoxious amount of repeated letters, exclamation points matched with caps lock and eight dramatic emojis makes it seem as if she has been paying attention to how that side of twitter functions, and she isn’t afraid to hide it.

This is great content. She’s bending the perception of celebrity, where celebrity meets celebrity and becomes the fangirl. It gives her followers something to “??”, relate to, and laugh at. There’s also a sense of irony that comes when a popular person seems to forget that they’re popular when they have an interaction with another popular person. While her reaction to Penn might have been bigger than I’d expected since she is more famous than him, the Robert one seems to be a little more understandable. Everyone knows about Twilight, and by her reaction, he was probably one of her celebrity crushes when she was a teen too. I hope we’ll see more of fangirl Cardi because it’s giving us a different side that not many other celebrities tap into, and more memes. At the same time, not all celebrities can do what Cardi is doing because then the idea of fame would crumble on itself.

Although she will most likely have other fangirl moments, I think she’ll only continue to share the ones with random white dudes that you would never associate with Cardi B to keep the joke going. As cool as it would be to see her react this way with someone like Beyoncé, it just wouldn’t have the same effect. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like East High’s Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) is next.
