Did Ash Ever Use An Evolution Stone?

Posted on

I know it’s been almost 25 years since Pokemon first aired, but I’m still as invested in the series as I was when I first saw the anime – maybe more!

Pokemon evolution is something that has always fascinated me: the whole drama of the Pokemon being surrounded by light, its transformation into an entirely new creature with cooler, stronger moves.

Evolution usually takes place when a Pokemon has reached a certain level or learns certain moves. Many times, a Pokemon will evolve during a battle to use their power upgrade to win against their opponents. In these cases, they can evolve with the help of evolution items, the most common being an evolution stone.

1. Did Ash ever use an evolution stone?

In the Kalos region, Ash uses the Key Stone, on his Lucario, who with the help of it, senses out the Mega Stone, Lucarionite. There is also one other time that Ash uses an evolution stone. In season 4, episode 187, Ash uses the Sun Stone to evolve a wild Sunkern into Sunflora.

So; besides the Johto League Champions and Pokemon Master Journeys, we’ve never really seen Ash use an evolution stone to help his Pokemon evolve. As we know, Ash is very respectful of his Pokemon’s choices and feelings. He has a great bond with most of his Pokemon, and they evolve to win in battle on their own accord, whenever they’re ready.

Sometimes, certain Pokemon are unable to evolve without an evolution item to trigger the process. For Mega Evolution, a Key Stone is required to boost the Pokemon’s aura so it can Mega Evolve when it has its Mega Stone. A Mega Stone is a special stone that is distinctive to the type of Pokemon, in order for it to complete its Mega Evolution.

In the latest episode of the twenty-fourth season, something happens that has never happened in the Pokemon anime before.

2. Ash finally gets Mega Evolution!

Korrina returns in “The Lucarionite! Great Adventure on Mega Island!!” and gives Ash a Mega Glove containing a Key Stone –  a Key Item that will allow Lucario to Mega Evolve with its Mega Stone – Lucarionite. Lucario finds the Lucarionite on Mega Island, and using the Key Stone, becomes the first of Ash’s Pokemon to be able to use Mega Evolution.

We’ve all been waiting for this moment ever since Mega Evolution was introduced in Gen VI – and it’s finally happening!

3. Does Ash have another evolution stone?

In episode 74 of the Diamond and Pearl season, Ash revealed that he still possessed the Thunder Stone given to him by Nurse Joy in Vermillion City, back in season 1. He never uses it.

This is because Ash leaves evolution up to his Pokemon; of course, Pikachu being Pikachu, refuses to evolve into Raichu. This could be because he feels there might be a chance that he would lose his memories and personality.

Anyway, there is no way Pikachu is ever going to evolve. Ash and Pikachu are the face of Pokemon, and after more than two decades of the anime, Pika is here to stay, Thunder Stone or not.

What are the other evolution stones?

There are 10 evolutions stones in total: Water, Fire, Ice, Leaf, Thunder, Dawn, Dusk, Sun, Moon, and Shiny. There are also a few other stones outside of the 10, that are related to Pokemon evolution. They are Everstone, King’s Rock, Sun Shard, Moon Shard, Oval stone, and of course, the Key stone.

About Pokémon

Pokémon was first released in 1996 and is set up in a world where humans catch monsters and store them in pocket-sized poke-balls.

They are creatures with an affinity to certain elements and some superhuman abilities related to that element.
